Pelosi Welcomes Liberian President Johnson-Sirleaf to the Capitol

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Speaker Dennis Hastert, and House Democrats welcomed to the Capitol today at a news conference after her address to a joint session of Congress. Below are Pelosi’s remarks:

Liberia

Leader Pelosi, Rep. Waters, Caucus Chair Clyburn,
and Liberian President Johnson-Sirleaf.

“Thank you very much Mr. Speaker, I know I speak for everyone who was here today when we thank you for making this possible.  It was a transforming experience for the American people to hear this great lady – the first woman elected president of an African country.  What a thrill for us to have her here.

“We saw her greatness, her intellect, her integrity, and her courage.  When many of us were in Liberia a few weeks ago, we also saw the respect that she commanded – the affection from young girls, the respect from all in Liberia.

“When she came here today, she inspired a country, she taught us a history lesson, and she also taught us that when she says she is going to succeed, she means it.

“When we were in Africa, I said to the employees of the American embassy in Liberia that when President Johnson-Sirleaf was elected, she electrified the world.  Her election did that.  Now she’s done that in our country.  We owe it to her to help with that power grid, to electrify Liberia.

“Madam President, more power to you.”
