Pelosi: All Intelligence Committee Members Should Be Briefed On President’s Domestic Surveillance Program

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on President Bush’s domestic surveillance program and the need to brief all Members of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees:

“Until all members of the House and Senate intelligence committees are fully briefed, it is impossible for them to judge whether the NSA domestic surveillance program is lawful and effective.

“Aggressive oversight is not possible when the Bush Administration decides how many Members of the intelligence committees can be briefed.

“The intelligence oversight committees authorize the funding for the domestic surveillance program, and, now that the President has publicly disclosed the existence of the program, it is unreasonable for the Administration to insist that the authorization decision should be made knowledgably by only a few committee members.

“On a program that raises such serious constitutional concerns, Congress must insist that all members of the intelligence committees have access to the information they need to perform their critical oversight responsibility.”
