Pelosi: Comprehensive Immigration Reform Is Long Overdue

Washington, D.C. -- As thousands gathered on Capitol Hill this afternoon to call for comprehensive immigration reform, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement:

"I am encouraged to see so many people from all over the country join together to urge comprehensive immigration reform. We must oppose draconian and inhumane measures that seek to divide families while criminalizing churches and advocates for immigrants.

"Comprehensive immigration reform is imperative to keep the American people safe, protect our borders, and enhance our national security. We must work now to advance comprehensive, bipartisan reform such as the Kolbe-Gutierrez legislation in the House, which is also sponsored in the Senate by John McCain and Ted Kennedy. Action on this legislation is long overdue."
