Pelosi on Gulf Coast: 'There Is a Long Way to Go to Restore the Region to What It Once Was'
Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after leading a bipartisan Congressional delegation with Speaker Hastert to the Katrina affected Gulf Coast states:
“My colleagues and I have seen firsthand the immense devastation Hurricane Katrina caused in the Gulf Coast region and know there is a long way to go to restore the region to what it once was. The effort to get survivors back to work and back in their homes is a challenge to our national conscience that we must rise to meet.

“Six months after Hurricane Katrina, tens of thousands of survivors are still uprooted and facing an unparalleled struggle to rebuild their lives and their homes. In areas that were once filled with the sound of kids playing in their front yards, there is now only emptiness and darkness. But through this darkness, we saw the light of hope that is the strength and determination of Gulf Coast residents to rebuild their region. House Democrats are committed to helping Katrina survivors every step of the way, ensuring that they have the resources they need to rebuild.
“But rebuilding is not enough. The people of the Gulf Coast want to know how this terrible disaster could have happened and what steps the government is taking to ensure that this never happens again. It’s time for honest leadership and open government, beginning with an independent, bipartisan Katrina Commission to conduct and in-depth investigation. The people of the Gulf Coast deserve nothing less.”
