Pelosi: ‘Davis Report a Vote of No Confidence’

Washington D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement this morning in response to the Davis Committee report on Hurricane Katrina and again called for an independent, bipartisan Katrina Commission to investigate the failed federal response to the natural disaster:

"The federal response to Hurricane Katrina is an American scandal. Hundreds of thousands of Gulf Coast families are still paying the price of the Bush Administration’s incompetence, cronyism, and failed leadership.  The Davis report is a vote of no confidence in the Bush Administration’s ability to keep America safe.

"Even a Republican Congress that has refused to perform any oversight of the Bush Administration had to conclude that the response to Katrina was a 'national failure.'

"Still, the Davis Committee report is incomplete and leaves the American people with too many unanswered questions and absolutely no accountability. Congress must hold failed leaders accountable so that mistakes of this magnitude never again happen. To restore Americans’ confidence that the federal government can adequately respond to natural or terrorist disasters, we must have a thorough investigation by an independent, bipartisan Katrina Commission, modeled on the 9/11 Commission.

"Republicans leaders never miss an opportunity to tell the American people that they would keep them safer than Democrats do, but the independent, bipartisan 9/11 Commission report card and the Davis report show that Republicans’ homeland security rhetoric does not match reality.

"Democrats have a better idea – create an independent Katrina Commission, and address existing security weaknesses and establish a comprehensive strategy for homeland security."
