Pelosi Remarks on Election of John Larson as Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus
Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi joined other Democratic leaders at a press stakeout this morning after the Democratic Caucus meeting in which Congressman John Larson of Connecticut was elected Vice Chair of the Caucus. Pelosi also discussed the cost of the Republican culture of corruption to the American people. Below are her remarks:
"My friends, today we saw a wonderful display of talent with the nominations of three great candidates for Vice Chair. My congratulations go to Congressman Joe Crowley of New York for an excellent campaign. He will have a strong role to play in our effort to win the House and to bring this place back to the American people. And to Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky from Chicago, she has been a leader in Congress and will continue to be so.
"I am delighted to congratulate our colleague, John Larson, the gentleman from Connecticut, for his impressive victory today. As we all have talked about, unity is the order of the day. The spirit of our colleagues to rally around this new, excellent addition to the leadership in the Democratic Caucus is a great day for us.
"Steny [Hoyer], Jim [Clyburn], and I are very proud of the record of unity that we have – 88 percent Democrats voting together against the immoral Republican budget, against the Republican energy bill, which heaps mountains of costs onto America’s homeowners, and fails to reduce the price at the pump.
"The culture of corruption in Washington, D.C. has a cost to the American people. So our first order of business is to go to the House floor to fight for a real reform package that places power back into the hands of the American people, where it belongs. We’ll stop the cost of corruption to the American people, whether it is in home heating oil, gas prices, or in the price of prescription drugs.
"We’re on our way to drain the swamp of corruption and go forward to make the future better for all of America’s children."
