Pelosi Statement on the Death of Coretta Scott King

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement this morning on the death of civil rights leader Coretta Scott King :

"Coretta Scott King was the keeper of the flame.  After years of marching alongside her husband, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., she led marches of her own after his tragic death.

"In the nearly 40 years that followed, she agitated, she struggled, and she remained committed to the vision.  She was a civil rights leader in her own right, and with her singularity of purpose and sheer tenacity, she often triumphed.  The Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change and the Martin Luther King holiday both stand today as testament to her vision and efforts.  On the eve of Black History Month, we recommit to finishing her work.

"It is with great sadness and respect that I extend deepest condolences to Mrs. King’s children, her family, and to the multitudes of her friends and supporters around the world.  I hope it is a comfort to them that the entire nation mourns their loss and are praying for them at this sad time."
