Pelosi Statement on the Lunar New Year

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in commemoration of the Lunar New Year, which begins this Sunday, January 29:

"Today, I want to take the opportunity to commemorate the start of the Lunar New Year and help usher in the Year of the Dog. As Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) around the world celebrate the beginning of the New Year with new hopes and dreams for the future, we are reminded of how these aspirations have helped make our country stronger.

"This special time of renewal and thanksgiving, celebrated with family and friends is considered a time to sweep away the old misfortunes of the past in order to welcome prosperity, good luck, and excellent health for the future.

"As House Democratic Leader, I am proud to represent San Francisco, where our diversity is our strength. Home to one of the largest AAPI populations in the United States, the San Franciscan AAPI community plays a vital role in the economic development and social progress of our city. From politics to the arts, from education to sports, AAPIs have contributed greatly. The Lunar New Year is a wonderful time to recognize the innumerable gifts that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have contributed in every aspect of American life.

"I am honored to take part in this wonderful celebration, to embrace and share the colorful traditions of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community and San Francisco."
