Pelosi Statement on International Human Rights Day

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement to commemorate International Human Rights Day which falls on December 10th every year:

"On International Human Rights Day we commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and recommit ourselves to the values that are contained therein.  The international community, led by the United States, should reaffirm our faith in the inherent worth and dignity of every person, and dedicate ourselves to continuing the work of rooting out injustice wherever it resides.

"In particular on this day, American leaders must take a firm stand against the use of torture.  The values that define our country – the values that our men and women in uniform are called upon to defend even at the cost of their lives – are antithetical to the use of torture.   We weaken ourselves when we compromise these values.  Standing against torture helps define the differences between the United States and those who offer no message other than hatred and violence.

"On this day, let us also remember the rights of workers across the world, as they struggle for the right to organize and bargain collectively.  As these rights are under a fierce onslaught in many countries, we must remain committed to the words of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that reinforce the right to form unions as ‘vital to promoting broadly shared economic prosperity, social justice, and strong democracies.’"
