Pelosi: Republican Budget Failure a Victory for the American People

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and other House Democratic leaders held a news conference this afternoon to hail a victory for the American people when Republican leaders were forced to pull their immoral budget from the House floor today due to lack of votes. Below are Pelosi’s remarks:

"This afternoon, when the Republicans pulled the budget reconciliation bill from the House floor, the American people got a reprieve. A reprieve from the harsh policies of that bill, a bill that the religious communities of the leading denominations in our country, have said is an immoral budget.

"A bill that increases the deficit, that gives huge tax cuts for the wealthiest people in America, while not giving the relief it promises to the people affected by the hurricanes, while increasing the cost of student aid by $6,000 for America’s students, by cutting food stamps in school lunch programs for America’s children, by cutting health assistance to those children, and all kinds of other assistance to America’s children.

"It was a bill that was anti-family, anti-taxpayer, and anti-American. By having to pull it today, it is a failure on the part of the Republicans.

"I am proud to stand here with Members of the Democratic leadership, to say that working together, we made the issues in that budget too hot for the Republicans to handle. They heard from the American people. This is a victory for the American people, when Republicans heard directly from them on the elections on Tuesday.

"In California, we had a referendum on the ballot that mirrored these harsh policies in Washington, D.C., and it was resoundingly defeated across the board. In other states across the country, the results were not lost on the Republicans here.

"When left to their own devices, the Republicans would perpetrate this terrible budget on the American people. Because Democrats made the issues to hot too handle, the Republicans have a massive failure on their hands.

"In our Caucus we are led on the Budget Committee by a giant on these issues, John Spratt of South Carolina. He has been our intellectual leader on this issue. I would also like to commend our distinguished Whip, Steny Hoyer, who has kept the Democrats together on this.

"The fact that we were unified, organized, and informed on this budget and willing to speak out on it gives the American people the victory they have today."
