Joint Statement of House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert and Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi

On Vote Allowing the Remains of Rosa Parks to Lie in Honor in the Capitol

Washington, D.C. – House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) and Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) today released the following statement after the House approved, by voice vote, S. Con. Res. 61, Authorizing the Remains of Rosa Parks to Lie in Honor in the Capitol Rotunda:

“Rosa Parks’ contributions to our nation are unforgettable.  We are all more free and tolerant because she would not move on that day in 1955.   It is only fitting that we honor her with this tribute,” said Speaker Hastert.  “The Capitol serves as a beacon of American liberty, freedom and democracy, and Rosa Parks served as the Mother of the America we grew to be – a rich, diverse nation of all shades, ethnicities and religions.”

“It is fitting that Rosa Parks is the first woman to lie in honor in the Capitol.  In honoring her legacy in this way, we are reminded that the power of one person, acting with a singularity of purpose, driven by the ideals of justice, is infinite,” said Leader Pelosi.  “As we grieve the loss of Rosa Parks, we recommit ourselves to her lifelong struggle to create an America that reflects the hopes and aspirations of all of its citizens.”
