Pelosi Statement on the Passing of Former Congressman Ed Roybal

Washington, D.C.Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the death of former Congressman Edward R. Roybal of California:

“Today our country has lost a visionary and distinguished public servant.  Edward R. Roybal was a tireless advocate on behalf of those who did not have a voice.  He never faltered in his work to achieve affordable health care for the poor and our nation’s senior citizens.  Through his sensitivity, foresight, and legislative activism, Edgave senior citizens the hope that government would not ignore their long-term health care needs.  He was there when others in Washington turned their backs on seniors, the disadvantaged, and the poor.

“I had the pleasure of serving with Ed on the House Appropriations Committee where I saw firsthand what an outstanding advocate, yet humble public servant he was.  He was the first Mexican American elected to the Los Angeles City Council in 1949, since the 1880s, and was a pioneer for all Latinos in California.  He became a Member of Congress in January 1963, where he served for 30 years.

“He later helped found the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) and the Caucus’ Institute, and embarked on a mission to provide scholarships to needy Latino children and expand opportunities for all Americans.  Through his work as founder emeritus of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO), he contributed to the advancement of Latino political power in southern California and the entire nation.  Hundreds of Latino elected officials have since followed in his footsteps.  By his courage and determination to open the doors to minorities, Latinos have become much more active in politics and all facets of American society.

“Ed Roybal’s legacy of fighting injustice and expanding opportunities will continue to inspire all Americans to work for equality.

“I extend my deepest sympathies to Ed’s daughter, my wonderful colleague Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard, and her entire family during their time of mourning.  I hope that it is a comfort to them that so many people share their loss and extend their sympathy at this sad time.”
