Pelosi: Republicans’ Ill-Conceived Budget Cuts Fail to Help Survivors of Hurricane Katrina

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in response to President Bush’s comments this morning on the need for compassion and fiscal responsibility in federal budgeting:

“Democrats stand united to address national needs with compassion and fiscal responsibility.  Unfortunately, the President and his Republican allies continue to focus on the interests of their special interest cronies.  Americans need compassion backed by real solutions that address the urgent needs of those who need our help most – hurricane survivors, students, seniors, and rural Americans – not more empty Republican rhetoric.

“Under the guise of helping the survivors of Hurricane Katrina, Republicans have proposed ill-conceived and punitive spending cuts that give $70 billion in tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans, increase the deficit by $20 billion, and do not actually help the victims of our most recent natural disasters.

“It is shameful that the President and his Republican allies continue to offer empty, partisan rhetoric.  Democrats believe that together, America can do better.”
