Pelosi: Statement on the 94th Anniversary of the National Day of the Republic of China (Taiwan)
People in Taiwan and all over the world, notably in San Francisco, celebrate October 10th as “Double Tenth Day,” in commemoration of the Wuchang Uprising of 1911. The uprising triggered the collapse of the Qing Dynasty and the establishment of the Republic of China. It was a milestone in China’s political development and the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the Chinese people. To mark the day, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement:
“On the occasion of the 94th Anniversary of the National Day of the Republic of China, I send my best wishes and congratulations to the people celebrating “Double Tenth Day.”
“The Republic of China is a critical partner of the United States – economically, culturally, strategically and politically. Over the last decade, Taiwan has shown that true democracy can be successful even in the face of adversity and intimidation. The Republic of China continues to be a prosperous nation characterized by strong economic growth and respect for basic human rights and freedoms.
“President Chen Shui-bian has been a strong leader in maintaining Taiwan’s democracy and a steadfast ally of the United States. I will continue to work so that cooperation between our two nations grows stronger and Taiwan is further integrated into the community of nations.
“I am blessed in my district with so many Asian-Americans, including many from Taiwan, who make rich contributions to San Francisco and its civic life. It is my privilege to congratulate the celebrants of the “Double Tenth” festival of freedom. I am proud to voice the support and best wishes of the Republic of China’s many friends in Congress, and look forward to celebrating this historic event for many years to come.”
