Pelosi Statement on the Death of Judge Constance Baker Motley

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the death of Judge Constance Baker Motley:

“Judge Constance Baker Motley was a fierce champion for civil rights. By fighting to ensure that everyone is afforded the same rights and opportunities, she stood at the forefront of many civil rights battles. She wrote the draft complaint for Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 and represented students who dared to integrate the University of Georgia in the early 1960s.

“In her long and remarkable career, Judge Motley chartered new paths for African Americans and women alike. She was the first African American woman appointed to the federal bench and the first black woman elected to the New York State Senate. Today, I am proud to serve in a Congress with 43 African American Members, showing that America is at its best when our remarkable diversity is reflected in those who represent us. Though our work is far from done and the struggle continues, today we give credit to Judge Motley for her role as both a pioneer and a mentor to so many successful leaders.

“It is with sadness and respect that I extend deepest condolences to Judge Motley's family, friends, and to all those she touched over the course of her extraordinary life. I hope her family finds comfort in knowing that so many people are praying for them at this sad time.”
