Pelosi: Just as White House Resisted Truth About 9/11, They Now Resist Truth About Hurricane Katrina

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi joined other Democratic leaders and former 9/11 Commission Member Tim Roemer at a press stakeout today after the Democratic Caucus meeting to discuss the need for an independent commission to investigate the response to Hurricane Katrina. Below are Pelosi’s remarks:

“Thank you very much Chairman Menendez. I am pleased to join you in welcoming our former colleague, 9/11 Commissioner Tim Roemer to the Capitol to share his views about the importance of an independent commission.

“I am also pleased to join you and congratulate you in your leadership in introducing legislation to establish such a commission for Hurricane Katrina, and now Hurricane Rita. Tim Roemer knows full well how difficult it was to establish the 9/11 Commission. There was tremendous resistance from the White House, and without the advocacy of the families of 9/11, the White House would have never given in.

“They resisted the truth then; they resist the truth now. Why is the truth significant? First of all, we owe it to the American people. But most importantly, the truth will make us safer. That is our responsibility to the American people.

“So I would hope the Republicans would see the light that their so-called hearings that they are having are really just a whitewash. We are going to get the truth that we owe to the American people. If they are going to trust government in times of natural disaster or man-made attack, then we must have a non-partisan, independent commission do the work.

“I want to thank Tim Roemer, Governor Kean, Lee Hamilton and all the members of the 9/11 Commission, and most importantly the families of 9/11. They not only gave us a 9/11 Commission, which is a model for the situation that we have now, they also gave us a legacy of openness and transparency that is critical to our country, and we are very much in their debt.”
