Female Lawmakers Urge Senate Judiciary Committee to Oppose Roberts

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi joined Congresswomen Hilda L. Solis (D-CA), Chair of the Democratic Women’s Working Group, Rosa L. DeLauro (D-CT), and Lois Capps (D-CA) today in urging Senate Judiciary Committee Members to oppose the nomination of Judge John G. Roberts to be the next Chief Justice of the United States

Democratic women Members are frustrated that Roberts failed to reassure the country that he respects the right to privacy, women’s reproductive rights, and civil rights during his confirmation hearings last week.  Because of Roberts’ refusal to answer substantive questions on women’s rights, Democratic women Members of Congress oppose his nomination as Chief Justice.  Last week, these female lawmakers wrote members of the committee expressing their concerns.  To view the letter, click here.

“During his confirmation hearings, Judge Roberts failed to repudiate his past activities that undermined women's rights, civil rights for all Americans, and the ability of federal courts to protect our liberties,” Pelosisaid.  “Therefore, I have concluded that confirming Judge Roberts as Chief Justice will put our liberties and civil rights at risk – a risk we cannot afford.  He should not be confirmed.”

“Throughout his hearings, Judge Roberts refused to clarify his position on the right to privacy and women’s rights,” said Solis.  “A qualified Chief Justice would respect the right to privacy.  Since Judge Roberts has squandered his opportunity to let the American people know whether he respects the rights of women, I must oppose his nomination and hope that the Senate Judiciary Committee Members follow suit.”

“I am particularly concerned by Judge Roberts’ views on issues important to women – positions he failed to elaborate on during his Senate confirmation hearings,” said DeLauro.  “The Chief Justice must bring more to the Supreme Court than good credentials and a keen legal mind, they must also demonstrate a commitment to upholding the Constitution and the protections it provides all people.  I hope that all Members of the Senate will take these views into consideration before confirming this judge to the Supreme Court for life.”

“I am extremely concerned about Judge Roberts’ past arguments on issues concerning women’s rights and civil liberties,” said Capps.  “I fear a court led by him would turn back the clock for American women, from reproductive rights to sex discrimination in education to equal economic opportunity.  Judge Roberts has not sufficiently told the Senate how he would protect and respect the rights of women, so I must urge my Senate colleagues to oppose the nomination.”
