Pelosi Statement on the Nomination of John Roberts as Chief Justice of the United States
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on President Bush’s nomination of Judge John Roberts as Chief Justice of the United States:
“Given the additional role of the Chief Justice as the leader of the entire federal judiciary, it is even more vital for the Senate to carry out its constitutional duty to seek full answers in the nomination of Judge John Roberts.
“In particular, serious questions must be asked regarding Judge Roberts’ views toward the independence of the judiciary, the separation of powers, and our civil liberties and right to privacy. His prior position in condoning court stripping to deny federal courts the ability to review certain claims raises great concerns that must be addressed.
“I look forward to working with Leader Reid and other Senators to ensure that the views of the diverse House Democratic Caucus are taken into account as the President again nominates a successor to Justice O’Connor. The President should seek to unify the country by consulting with legislators of both parties and by choosing a respected nominee who will command wide consensus, and be committed to core American values of fairness, equality, and justice.”
