House Democrats Hold 1,000th Social Security Event; Higgins Event on Thursday Helps Democrats Hit Their Goal

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer announced today that Congressman Brian Higgins (D-NY) will hold House Democrats’ 1,000th Social Security event this Thursday in Jamestown, N.Y.

For six months, House Democrats have held Social Security events across the country to educate people about President Bush’s risky privatization plan and to highlight Democrats’ commitment to strengthening Social Security. These events were all open to the public, and included town hall meetings, roundtable discussions, and speeches on privatization.

“Social Security has meant dignity and independence for millions of Americans who have relied on its guaranteed benefit during retirement, disability, or the death of a loved one,” Pelosi said. “For 70 years, Social Security has never failed to pay promised benefits, and Democrats will fight to make sure that Republicans do not turn a guaranteed benefit into a guaranteed gamble.”

Hoyer said: “House Democrats’ energy on Social Security is a testament to our strong belief that the American people do not want privatization and that privatization would not be good for the American people. Democrats are going to continue to talk about our readiness to craft a bipartisan solution for Social Security's long-term solvency challenge, as well as our solid opposition to private accounts.”

Democrats are united in opposition to President Bush’s and House Republicans’ risky Social Security privatization plans, which would cut guaranteed benefits by more than 40 percent for middle-class beneficiaries, increase the national debt by $5 trillion – leaving the bill to our children and grandchildren, and weaken the Social Security system in the future.

In August, House Democrats will celebrate the 70th anniversary of Social Security at dozens of events around the country. House Democrats will highlight the guarantee that Social Security has provided to millions of Americans for 70 years and will renew their commitment to strengthening Social Security for generations to come.

Congressman Higgins’ town hall meeting will be the 1,000th Social Security event; it will be held on Thursday, August 4 at 2 p.m. in Jamestown, NY.
