Pelosi: Pressure From Democrats Leads to $1.5 Billion for Veterans’ Health Care

Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the passage of H.R. 2361, the Interior Appropriations bill, which included $1.5 billion to cover the funding shortfall for veterans’ health care:

“Today’s vote to provide $1.5 billion for veterans’ health care is a long-delayed victory for our brave men and women who have defended this great country. But it could not have been possible without the tireless pressure of Democrats in Congress, who stood shoulder to shoulder with veterans’ organizations to make sure our nation’s heroes get the benefits they deserve.

“Democrats have repeatedly attempted to increase funding for veterans’ health care, only to face opposition from the Republican majority. On four occasions in just the past month, Republicans have voted to block Democratic amendments that would address the VA’s funding needs. And only recently, did the Bush Administration even acknowledge that there was a funding shortfall.

“But Democratic efforts have made this too hot for the Republicans to handle, and finally, veterans will receive the necessary funding they have earned. And Democrats will continue to fight for our veterans -- working to remedy the upcoming year’s shortfall in veterans’ health care.

“On the battlefield, the military pledges to leave no soldier behind. As a nation, let our pledge be that when they return home we leave no veteran behind.”
