Pelosi Statement on Reauthorization of Ryan White CARE ActWashington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the need to reauthorize the Ryan White CARE Act: “The reauthorization of the Ryan White CARE Act must be one of the top priorities in Congress this year. The Bush Administration’s principles appropriately focus on accountability and on serving women and communities of color who are experiencing sharp increases in infections. However, I am concerned about the harmful impact the Bush Administration’s proposal will have on my district in San Francisco and on the state of California. “San Francisco was one of the first epicenters of the AIDS epidemic and remains one of the hardest hit areas in the country. We have established a system of care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS that is a model for the nation. However, the principles outlined by the Bush Administration would significantly reduce federal resources to San Francisco and California, undermining the quality and continuity of care for thousands of San Franciscans living with HIV/AIDS, and further restricting access to treatment and support for women and minorities in our community. “I will work with the Administration and my colleagues in Congress to ensure a swift reauthorization that maintains and strengthens existing systems of care, while expanding access to lifesaving therapies.” |
“ Democrats are united in presenting a New Direction for America, one that will make our nation as strong as its people, one that brings opportunity, security, and prosperity to all Americans. ” Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi |
