Pelosi Address to National Newspaper Publishers' Association

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi spoke today to the National Newspaper Publishers Association. The NNPA, also known as the Black Press of America, is a 62-year-old federation of more than 200 African-American community newspapers. Below is a transcript of her remarks:

"To Jake Oliver, President of National Newspaper Publishers Association, and the other members of this historic organization--I want to thank you for coming to our nation’s capital. Thank you – Terry McAuliffe, Lottie Shackleford and the Democratic National Committee – for hosting this annual meeting.

"I am pleased to address you for the first time as House Democratic Leader. As you know, our leadership team is experienced and diverse. Steny Hoyer, Bob Menendez, Bob Matsui, and Jim Clyburn are doing a tremendous job in the House. I understand Jim Clyburn, a former newspaper publisher, is a proud member of your organization.

"I don’t have to tell you that The National Newspaper Publishers Association , affectionately known as the Black Press of America, is well-respected within the African American community.

"From the publication of the first African-American newspaper in 1827 until today, you have given voice to Black America for more than 175 years.

"I look forward to our getting to know each other and establishing a solid working relationship.

"With the events of today, the thoughts and prayers of all Americans are with our military forces and their families.

"There is no heavier burden for a President and no more solemn choice for this nation than to send our brave men and women in uniform into battle.

"As Commander-in-Chief, President Bush has made that decision.

"As Americans, we stand united behind our men and women in uniform. We are one team in one fight, and we stand together.

"As a Congress, charged by the United States Constitution with providing for the common defense, we pledge today that our forces and their families will have the support they need in the difficult and dangerous days ahead – both to win this war and to secure the peace. I expect the Congress will act swiftly on legislation to provide that support.

"The Congress also will continue to address responsibilities here at home. Our Democratic priorities are the safety and soundness of the American people. One of the most of our responsibilities is to present a budget that reflects America’s values, and funds our priorities.

"As we debate the budget, Democrats will fight for and present a budget plan that will create jobs and invest in the education and healthcare initiatives that this country needs for long-term economic growth.

"Job creation is critical. Minority-owned businesses are the most rapidly growing segment of the business community. With small businesses, these are the engines of our economy by producing 75 percent of all new jobs.

"This record of success is due in part to the availability of assistance from the Small Business Administration that funding the Minority Business Development Agency and programs that mentor and provide investment assistance to minority-owned small business.

"These programs are vital for job creation and an important investment to our minority communities.

"Democrats have presented a budget alternative provides an additional $244 billion for these and other important priorities, while balancing the budget, creating jobs, and keeping our promises to minority communities, seniors and working families of America.

"Democrats have presented a plan that will invest in programs like Head Start and Pell Grants that help millions of minority students achieve educational excellence.

"The safety and soundness of the American people also means addressing homeland security needs here at home, ensuring health care for all Americans, and quality education for all our children and young people.

"I was proud to join the Congressional Black Caucus, CBC Chairman Elijah Cummings, and Rep. John Conyers in filing an amicus brief to support the University of Michigan’s admissions policies that are being challenged in the U.S. Supreme Court. Affirmative action in education gives students a ladder to climb over the barriers to opportunity. Unfortunately, the Bush Administration wants to haul that ladder away. The Democratic Party will continue fight for those opportunities for all Americans.

"I could not come before you without mentioning the Sun-Reporter Publishing Company that is based in my hometown of San Francisco.

"The Sun-Reporter has a readership of approximately 600,000 and covers the Bay Area.

"I understand Mr. Thomas Fleming could not be with us today. At the age of 95, he continues to write in the Sun-Report, and is a leader in the community. We all admire his dedication.

"I salute you and the publications you represent, as you continue your advocacy of the African American community. Thank you again for coming and I look forward to working with you in the months and years to come."
