Shays Launches the One Coast One Future Health Care Cluster Initiative



Shays launched the
One Coast, One Future Health Care Initiative at Norwalk Hospital with Chris Bruhl, President and CEO of the Business Council of Fairfield County; Mary Franco, Vice President of Public Affairs at Norwalk Hospital and President of the Norwalk Hospital Foundation; Paul Milton, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Norwalk Hospital; Norwalk Mayor Dick Moccia; Dr. Michael Marks, Chief of the Medical Staff at Norwalk Hospital; and Paul Timpanelli, President and CEO of the Bridgeport Regional Business Council.

Congressman Christopher Shays recently launched the One Coast One Future Health Care Cluster Initiative, which will assess the region’s current and future healthcare needs and identify the resulting entrepreneurial and job creation opportunities within the healthcare industry. The Health Care Cluster Initiative is one of six components of the One Coast, One Future consortium which is funded by a nearly $1 million federal grant procured by Shays.

The WorkPlace, Inc.

Emily DeRocco, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Administration at the U.S. Department of Labor, visited the Fourth Congressional District recently to highlight Congressman Shays' One Coast, One Future initiative. With $1 million in federal funding, which Shays helped secure, One Coast, One Future seeks to enhance economic links between Bridgeport, Norwalk and Stamford to encourage job, housing and development opportunities in the region

While in Connecticut, DeRocco also announced a $1.5 million grant for The WorkPlace, Inc. to provide on-the-job experience and training to low-income workers aged 55 and older. She toured CTWorks' One Stop Mobile Career Coach Lab, The WorkPlace's Innovation Lab and spoke to students, community and business leaders at Norwalk Community College about regional economic development.

Shays, Meehan Work for Tougher Ethics, Fair Campaign Finance Laws

Congressmen Christopher Shays and Marty Meehan (D-MA) are continuing their fight to reform the campaign finance and ethics rules on Capitol Hill. Recently, Judge Emmett Sullivan found in favor of Shays and Meehan in their lawsuit against the Federal Election Commission (FEC) for the FEC’s failure to bring 527 groups under campaign finance law and their 527 Reform Act is scheduled for a vote on the House floor Wednesday, April 5. The legislators also testified before the House Rules Committee recently, advocating for an Office of Public Integrity and more transparency surrounding lobbying activities.

Shays, Hinchey Introduce Legislation to Decrease Dependence on Foreign Oil, Build Market for Renewables

Representatives Christopher Shays (R-CT) and Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) introduced comprehensive energy legislation today to address our nation’s growing energy needs. The bill, the Energy for Our Future Act, seeks to decrease U.S. dependence on foreign oil, protect the environment, build a market for renewable energy, and promote energy conservation.

Transportation Bill Delivers $93 Million to Fourth District for Key Projects
State's roads and transit system to benefit from nearly $3 billion in federal funds

The nation's highway bill passed Congress last week, bringing $2.477 billion for Connecticut's highways and $485 million for the state's transit activities through 2009 -- a 19% increase over the previous transportation bill. The legislation includes $93 million for key transportation infrastructure projects in the Fourth District, including the Intermodal Centers in Stamford and Bridgeport.
