Washington, DC: Congressman Kenny Marchant (R-TX) released the following statement today, regarding the situation surrounding former Representative Mark Foley: "I am disgusted by the recent allegations of sexual misconduct by Mr. Foley. The congressional page program is meant to honor outstanding young people, providing them with memories they will cherish, not emotional scars they hope to forget. I join my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in condemning Mr. Foley's inexcusable behavior. My prayers and thoughts remain with the family of all those affected by this incident."
"Mr. Foley betrayed the trust of this institution, his colleagues, and most importantly, the American people. As the media has reported, and Speaker Hastert reiterated, unusual email communications on behalf of Mr. Foley to pages have existed for three years. After investigating these, however, the St. Petersburg Times, Miami Herald, ABC News and FBI all reached the same conclusion that the emails were not criminal. This all changed last week when the recent instant messages were brought to light."
"Knowing Speaker Hastert personally, I am confident in his integrity and honesty. Had he been made aware of the latest developments, I know he would have acted immediately to have Mr. Foley removed from the House instantly-with NO regard for political consequences. The Speaker continues to have my full vote of confidence."
