Marchant Responds to Supreme Court's Decision on Texas Map

June 28, 2006

Washington, DC: Today Representative Kenny Marchant (TX-24) issued the following statement regarding the Supreme Court's decision on the Texas congressional map:

"I am pleased that the Supreme Court recognized that this map fairly and accurately represents the sentiments of Texans.  The court has upheld our constitutional right to reverse years of Democrat gerrymandering.

"I am confident that the Texas legislature will make any necessary adjustments to satisfy the court with respect to Texas District 23.  I have no doubt that Rep. Bonilla, the only Hispanic Republican from Texas, will continue to represent this district for years to come.

"Today's ruling is a win not only for Republicans, but citizens of Texas.  Through redistricting, we actually increased minority representation in Texas.  The plan has produced positive results for our state.  Now it is time to forge ahead and focus on doing our best in Washington, D.C. to represent the people back home."
