Five Years Later:  Marchant Remembers September 11

September 11, 2006

Washington, DC: "Five years ago, our nation stood united in grief as we watched unspeakable acts of violence and brutality unfold on our soil.  Like all of us on September 11th, I will never forget the pain in my heart nor the prayers that immediately followed the news that over 2,973 people perished in these terrible attacks.  This tragedy forced our nation into the reality that our land of freedom and equality, is a constant target for those who despise the principles of democracy.

September 11th should not only serve as a memorial to the victims, but also as a commemoration of our success in preventing any attacks during the half decade that has followed.  Congress and President Bush worked together in the months after the attack to implement measures making national security our top priority, but much work remains.  Our enemy is one dedicated to terror and looking for weakness.  We as Americans must be devoted to security and mindful of the threat.  The recently foiled terrorist plot to destroy passenger aircraft flying from Britain to the United States, serves as a prime example of our need to continually update our nations security measures.  In Congress, we are going to be working in the upcoming months of September and October to fight terrorism and keep America safe.  These legislative priorities include:

  • approving the Presidents Terrorist Surveillance Program designed to identify and disrupt terror cells;
  • authorizing military tribunals for suspected terrorists;
  • strengthening border security;
  • funding and protecting American troops through military conference reports;
  • and homeland security appropriations conference report equipped with better funding for border security fences and barriers.

Through work and cooperation, we have turned the sorrow that followed September 11th, into security that is fueling the hope of a nation.  We must never forget that day nor the lives that were forever lost.  The war against terrorism is far from over, but our nation is safe and most importantly the Stars and Stripes still wave representing freedom and liberty.  That too must never be forgotten."
