ABOUT THE DISTRICT

The 5th District of New Jersey is one of the most beautiful and prosperous areas of New Jersey. It stretches from the rolling farmlands of Warren County through the mountains of Sussex and Passaic to the highest retail shopping zip code in America. It boasts an educated and highly prosperous people who enjoy one of the highest quality of life ratings, lowest unemployment and highest median incomes in all of New Jersey.

UNPARALLELED NATURAL BEAUTY

The 5th District is home to some of the most beautiful and scenic natural areas in the entire Northeast including a long stretch of the Appalachian Trail, the Delaware Water Gap Natural Recreation Area, the Ramapo Mountains and the Highlands, one of the most pristine and vital natural watersheds in the entire Northeast. Its diverse wildlife includes bald eagles, rattlesnakes, mountain lions and wolves.

TOURIST DESTINATION

Every year, tens of thousands of tourists flock to Northwest New Jersey to spend their summers hiking, boating, fishing, skiing and golfing. The 5th District is home to an Intrawest Resort, Mountain Creek, renowned for year round family entertainment only 60 miles from New York City. The Hermitage in Ho-Ho-Kus, a revolutionary war era stone house is where Aaron Burr was married. Many battles of the Revolutionary War were fought in the area. Visitors to the Skylands Portion of the District will have no shortage of quaint, historic bed and breakfasts to stay in during their visit and can even catch a New Jersey Cardinals minor league baseball game.

COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

The 5th District is home to several excellent centers of higher education including Ramapo College of New Jersey, Centenary College, Sussex County Community College, and Bergen County Community College, Warren County Community College, Dover Business College and Berkeley College, which recently opened a campus in Bergen County.

COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY

The 5th District is home to diverse commercial, technological and retail centers. Many fortune 500 companies including UPS, M&M; Mars, and Medco Health Solutions call the 5th District home. Because of the district's close proximity to New York City, tens of thousands of residents commute to NY on a daily basis and many of the NY companies have chosen to open satellite operations in the district. The eastern portion of the district has an excellent public transportation system that is used by almost half a million people a day who commute into New York City. The 5th District is also home to companies like High Point Solutions, considered by INC magazine as one of the fastest growing IT companies in America.

AGRICULTURE

The 5th is home to many working farms that provide milk and cheese to retailers throughout the nation. Some of the farms have converted to working farms where visitors can tour the facility and purchase homemade cheese and freshly grown produce home. The farms in the area supply many of the restaurants and farmers markets in New York City. Farmland preservation is major priority in the western portion of the district to ensure the farms retain their natural beauty for generations to come.
