Rep. Markey offers his "Network Neutrality" amendment in committee to save the internet.
Washington, D.C.- The internet was founded upon an open architecture thatsthat provides low barriers to entry for web-based content, applications and services. The openness of the internet, however, is in jeopardydue to the COPE Act, a recent telecommunications bill to come out of the Energy and Commerce Committee. The COPE Act will drasitcally change the internet, but Rep. Markey offered amendments and introduced legislation to protect “Network Neutrality” and save the internet as we know it today. Top Issue #3: America’s Energy Challenge
Washington, D.C.-The entire country is feeling the “pain at the pump” with the soaring prices of gasoline. To help ease the pain, Rep. Markey has been working on increasing the fuel economy standards for vehicles, implementing a windfall-profits tax on the oil industry and other initiatives. All of these initiatives were introduced earlier in the year - before gas prices were at their current record highs - but the Majority in Congress has not taken action on any of them, truly preventing serious reform that would easeease our current crisis. Washington, D.C.- On May 4, 2006, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 4954, the “Safe Ports Act.” This bill will enchance security at ports throughout the country; however, the underlying bill neglected to include a provision sponsored by Rep. Markey that would make it mandatory to screen 100% of the cargo that enters through American ports. The amendment, which was first offered in committee and was defeated 18-16 (check on this), was not made in order for the House floor debate and vote on the bill. To read more about Rep. Markey’s efforts to include a 100% Cargo screening amendment with H.R. 4954, please visit the website. How do you feel about our current level of port security? Take the poll.
