WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Rep. Edward Markey (D-MA), co-chair of the Privacy Caucus, sent a letter today to Department of Education Secretary Margaret Spellings, after today’s report in the Boston Globe revealed a tremendous breach in security for thousands of Americans who monitor their student loans online. Rep. Markey called on the Department of Education to offer free credit monitoring for all those whose financial information was exposed in the security breach and asked key questions about the problem and its impact on borrowers in Massachusetts and around the country.

Washington, D.C. – Representative Edward J. Markey (D-MA) made the following statement in response to the President’s 2007 budget, released today, which includes a$53.5 million cut for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) in 2007 and a $50 million decrease in CPB funds for 2008.
May 27, 2004- Administration Slashes $25 Million in Federal Assistance for Low Income Schools in MA
Washington, D.C.— Rep. Edward Markey today released an analysis of the Bush Administration’s cuts in funding to schools in high-poverty neighborhoods in his district, calling the proposal a “bankrupt educational policy unworthy of the United States of America.” On Friday, May 21, 2004, the Education Department announced that low income schools in Massachusetts schools will lose approximately $26 million in federal funding next year under the new Title I allocations. The Seventh District is slated to lose over $2.2 million in Title I funds. Title I funds are designed to provide additional funding to high poverty schools with large numbers of at-risk students.
