September 22, 2006 - 90% OF NEW MEDICARE PRESCRIPTION DRUG PROGRAM ENROLLEES IN MASSACHUSETTS AT RISK OF FALLING INTO THE DOUGHNUT-HOLE
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today U.S. Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-MA), a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, unveiled the startling rates of Massachusetts residents who have significant gaps in their Medicare coverage. The report, prepared by the House Ways and Means Committee looked at 140,175 seniors and disabled workers in Massachusetts, and concluded that 90% of newly enrolled Medicare Part D beneficiaries are at risk of falling into the “doughnut-hole,” the part of the program that contains a gap in coverage where beneficiaries continue to pay premiums without receiving financial coverage for medicines. The report also concluded that only 6,706 new enrollees gained full, uninterrupted coverage through the new law and that those beneficiaries paid a high price – premiums that were 253% higher – to get full coverage.
September 20, 2006 - HOUSE PANEL REJECTS MARKEY EFFORT TO PROTECT LIFE-SAVING RESEARCH FUNDING FROM RAVAGES OF INFLATION
Washington, DC -- Today the Republican majority of the House panel charged with overseeing the National Institute of Health (NIH) voted on party lines aginst protecting the NIH budget from the ravages of inflation. Rep. Edward Markey (D-MA), a senior member of the panel, offered an amendment that would have required that the annual authorization for life-saving research at NIH take inflation into account. No Republican voted for the Markey amendment.
August 3, 2006 - MARKEY UNVEILS REPORT SHOWING SERIOUS CUTS TO NIH BUDGET UNDERMINES MASS. HEALTH AND BIO-TECH SECTORS
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) released a report prepared by the House Appropriations Committee Democrats at the direction of Ranking member Rep. Dave Obey (D-WI), entitled, “President Bush and Congressional Republicans Undermine Lifesaving NIH Research.” This report details how ever since the doubling was completed, the National Institutes of Health NIH budget has been going backward in terms of the research it can support. Compared to 2003, the Republican budget would result in an 11 percent loss of NIH funding when adjusted for inflation.
