November 2, 2006 - MARKEY QUESTIONS INTERIOR ON OVERSIGHT OF $250 MILLION/YEAR COASTAL RESTORATION FUND
WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, Rep. Edward J. Markey, a senior member of the House Resources and Energy and Commerce Committees, sent a letter to Minerals Management Service (MMS) Director Johnnie Burton questioning the agency’s oversight of the multi-million dollar Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP). The CIAP was created as part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPACT) and directs $250 million per year to fund coastal restoration projects in states that have offshore oil and gas drilling activities. Rep. Markey asks for the specific oversight procedures that MMS will put in place to ensure that funds allocated under this program are spent properly. Rep Markey’s letter comes in light of MMS and Interior’s failure to properly oversee the royalty programs, which have resulted in the loss of millions or billions of taxpayer dollars.

May 25, 2006- Support Weakens for Oil Drilling in Wildlife Refuge
WASHINGTON, D.C. –Today the U.S. House of Representatives voted (225-Y, 201-N, with 7 members not voting) to support the American-made Energy and Good Jobs Act to open up the Arctic Refuge in Alaska to drilling.  The vote marks in increase in support of lawmakers fighting to protect the Arctic refuge, the last House vote on the Arctic refuge took place in April of 2005 and was passed with a vote of (231-Y, 200-N, with 3 members not voting).

February 8, 2006- The President Gives Green Energy the "Pink Slip"

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Edward J. Markey (D-MA), a senior Democratic Member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and author of the “Fuel Security and Consumer Choice Act” which would promote the use of alternative fuels to help reduce our nation’s dependence on foreign oil, reacted today to the news that the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado is laying off 32 employees because of budget cuts.
