U.S. Representative Schwartz Works to Strengthen

United States-Ukraine Relationship

Washington, D.C. - Yesterday, U.S. Representative Allyson Y. Schwartz voted in support of a bill to end harmful trade restrictions between the Ukraine and the United States.  As a co-sponsor of the bill, H.R. 1053, Schwartz worked to pass this important legislation which will further United States-Ukraine relations and will help to facilitate democratic and economic development in the Ukraine.

“As a member of the Congressional Ukrainian Caucus, I believe that a strong U.S-Ukraine relationship is beneficial to both nations, and that a democratic and prosperous Ukraine is important to regional and global stability. This vote was a clear step forward in strengthening the relationship between our two nations and helping to further democracy and stability in the Ukraine,” said Rep. Schwartz.

In 1974 Congress enacted the Jackson-Vanik amendment, which imposed trade restrictions against the Soviet Union in protest against Soviet polices that severely restricted emigration of Jews from Soviet Union. Over thirty years later, these restrictions are still in place for Ukraine. The vote to repeal the Jackson-Vanik trade restrictions for Ukraine passed resoundingly 417 to 2.
