Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart Applauds Signing of Terrorist Tribunal Law

WASHINGTON—Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) today applauded President Bush for signing into law the Military Commissions Act which will preserve the national security program for detaining and interrogating terrorists and authorize military tribunals to bring suspected terrorists to justice.

“There are new and changing threats every day that we need to proactively protect against,” Diaz-Balart said.  “It is clear that in the Global War on Terror, we are confronting the new face of evil.  This is an enemy that kidnaps and beheads hostages.  This is an enemy that willfully walks into a mall full of innocent people of all types and detonates a bomb strapped to its body.  This is an enemy that declared war on the United States decades ago and refuses to stop until liberty has been snuffed out.

“Republicans understand that we are the good guys and we are making sure our nation has the tools it needs to continue protecting Americans,” Diaz-Balart continued.  “By and large, Democrat Leadership has chosen with its votes to protect suspected terrorists over getting the vital information we need to secure the American people from terrorist threats. This is unfortunately one of many stances extreme liberal Democrats like Nancy Pelosi have taken that weaken our ability to protect this nation.”

Majority of Democrats in Congress continued their troublesome voting record on national security when 162 House Democrats and 32 Senate Democrats voted against authorizing a program that has saved American lives by providing invaluable intelligence on terrorist plots and operations. Other troubling stances by Democrat Leadership include: opposing the PATRIOT Act, opposing a terrorist surveillance program, opposing missile defense, opposing a strong stance against North Korea.
