KUHL APPLAUDS ACTION ON ROUTE 219
Construction to begin this winter

OLEAN, N.Y., Nov 2 - U.S. Rep. John R. Randy Kuhl, Jr. (R-Hammondsport) today applauded action by the New York State Department of Transportation on Route 219 construction.

“Now that all objections by the DEC and Army Corps are out of the way, DOT has advertised for bids for construction on the section of Rt. 219 from Springville to Ashford as required by the funds I secured in last year’s transportation authorization bill,” said Rep. Kuhl. “I would expect construction to begin soon, with heavy construction to continue next spring. This is a long-awaited announcement, and I thank everyone involved for their diligence in seeing it through to this point.”

The New York State DOT has advertised for bids on the next section of the Route 219 Freeway from Route 39 in Springville to Peters Road in Ashford, a length of approximately 3.5 miles. Project plans and bidding documents were available to interested contractors beginning November 1, 2006.

Contractors will be allowed to prepare bids for six weeks with a bid opening scheduled for Thursday December 14, 2006. Wetland and stream permits were the latest hurdle to the project until the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Army Corps of Engineers alerted the NYSDOT that the permits will be issued between November 10 and 14. Site preparation will likely begin this winter with heavy construction to begin next spring.

NYSDOT is continuing final design for another 3.5 miles of the Freeway between Peters Road and Snake Run Road in Ashford Hollow. This additional section is expected to have a bid opening in March 2007 with construction to start that summer.
