    Methamphetamine

Methamphetamine is a word we are growing too accustomed to hearing. Tennessee ranks second in the nation in meth lab activity with nearly 1,600 labs busted in 2004. Due to the rural nature of the district the majority of activity in Tennessee is in the Fourth District. One could argue that my district is the epicenter of Tennessee's meth crisis. Methamphetamine destroys families and communities. It's cheap, easy to make, and highly addictive. It's deadly and has been known to kill people who don't even use it. So when we talk about meth we are not just talking about one drug and how it affects the user we are also talking about the health and well being of those living in the same environment on a daily basis. And more often then not they are children. I am working with federal, state, and local officials to rid our homes of this terrible scourge. I applaud the efforts of Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen and the General Assembly for enacting strict laws on the sale of meth making materials such as pseudoephedrine.

Davis and Rep. Bart Gordon introduced The Methamphetamine Remediation Act of 2005, calling for the development of health-based guidelines for the clean up of former methamphetamine labs. These highly contaminated areas create monumental health problems and property damage often resulting in various, sometimes life threatening illnesses or the complete loss of property value.

Davis has been pushing for the full funding of the Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant Program, which was slated to be eliminated in the Administration's FY'06 budget.
