Congressman Robin Hayes Commemorates Memorial Day and Honors Fallen Soldiers in Luxembourg

WASHINGTON, DC – While leading a Congressional Delegation trip to Iraq and Afghanistan, Congressman Robin Hayes (NC-8) stopped to commemorate Memorial Day and honor fallen soldiers in Luxembourg.  Hayes and his delegation attended a wreath-laying ceremony at the American Cemetery and Memorial.

Hayes spoke the following words in honor of our nation’s fallen heroes:  “We come today on this hallowed ground to honor the men who gave their all and have come to rest at the Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial.  Soldiers who died here heroically battled the vast German counteroffensive that we know as the Battle of the Bulge.  Originally established in 1944 by the U.S. Third Army under General George Patton, this cemetery was a temporary burial ground for soldiers killed in the Ardennes hills.  In fact, General Patton was buried here, which is only fitting.

“As Memorial Day approaches, we honor all the men and women who have worked to keep us safe and paid the ultimate price for doing so.  We will never know what these men and women endured to protect freedom, but we do know that we can never forget their sacrifice.  Their memory remains and begs us to ask, if not for their proud service, where would our country be?”
