Congressman John B. Larson Recognized for Support of Fuel-Cell Technology

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John B. Larson Monday night accepted an award by the U.S. Fuel Cell Council recognizing his efforts in advancing a key alternative to fossil fuels.

The U.S. Fuel Cell Council presented Larson its 2005 Pathfinder Award at a ceremony held in the Russell Senate Office Building.

Larson has been a vigorous proponent of fuel-cell development as a means of ending our nation’s dependence on foreign oil and generating economic expansion at home. He has sponsored legislation increasing federal investment in hydrogen and fuel-cell technology.

“I am honored to be recognized by the U.S. Fuel Cell Council, which has been a leader in the development of fuel cells in America,” Larson said. “The need for fuel cells has never been greater, and I will continue to work in Congress to see that investment continue.

“Fuel cells provide an opportunity to address energy issues, the environment, the economy and foreign policy through one encompassing technology,” Larson added. “We ought to pursue this technology as diligently as we can because it is so important to our future. Fuel cells have the potential to provide clean, reliable energy for every person, home, business, and vehicle in America. They offer a solution to ending America's reliance on foreign energy sources while at the same time creating quality jobs for the next century in a new and expanding technological field.”

The U.S. Fuel Cell Council is an association dedicated to the development and expansion of fuel cells. Its 115 members include the world’s leading developers, manufacturers, suppliers and customers of fuel cells.

The council’s executive director Bob Rose said that Larson was one of two members of the House of Representatives that the council selected to receive the Pathfinder Award. The award is given to individuals not directly associated with the fuel-cell industry. The awards committee unanimously approved Larson’s nomination before sending it on to be polled by the general membership.

“Congressman Larson’s dedication and commitment to supporting the fuel-cell industry has been exceptional,” Rose said. “Therefore, it is with great pride that we offer this recognition.”
