In December, Congressman Larson visited Mayberry Village, the East Hartford community where he grew up, to participate in a Habitat for Humanity project. Several of Larson's staff members helped finish building a home for Trudy Fenty and her family. Above, Larson is joined by Kevin Flaherty of Sovereign Bank, Ms. Fenty, Julie Donahue, executive director of Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity, and Don Shaw, president of the Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity board of directors.
On December 8, Congressman Larson was joined by Congressman Pete King (R-NY) and Bruce Yarwood, President and CEO of the American Health Care Association, for the introduction of the Nursing Home and Fire Safety Act. Prompted by the deadly fire at the Greenwood Nursing Home in Hartford, this bill would help nursing homes become fully sprinklered.
On November 29, Senator Chris Dodd, CT Adjutant General Thaddeus Martin, and Congressman Larson awarded a posthumous army commendation medal for meritorious service to Joseph P. McDonald of East Hartford for his actions during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Accepting the medal on their father’s behalf were were his sons, George and Robert.
During the Thanksgiving district work period, Congressman Larson visited several senior centers around the district to discuss the new Medicare prescription drug benefit which begins on January 1. Here he visits East Hartford South End Senior Center on November 29.
On November 28, Congressman Larson held a public forum at Trinity College in Hartford to view the docudrama "Last Best Chance" and discuss reducing the threat of nuclear terrorism.
Congressman Larson recently introduced the Medicare Prescription Drug Flexibility for Seniors Act (H.R. 4410) to give seniors more time to choose the Medicare prescription drug plan best suited for their needs. Congressman Larson unviled the legislation in Washington with original cosponsors Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY), and Bart Stupak (D-MI). The following week, he held a press conference to discuss the legislation with current and former state legislators and senior advocates at the State Capitol.
On November 15, Congressman Larson met with former Irish Prime Minister and and current European Union Ambassador to the United States John Bruton. Ambassador Bruton was meeting with members of the Ways and Means Committee to discuss a variety of trade issues.
As a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, Congressman Larson participated in a hearing held on November 3 to examine the tax status of credit unions. You can read hearing testimony of the Ways and Means Committee web site.
On October 12, Congressman Larson held a public forum at Northwestern Connecticut Community College in Winsted on foreign policy. Larson talked with citizens of the 1st District and answered questions about Iraq and ending America's dependence on foreign oil.
On October 17, Congressman Larson spoke at the groundbreaking for phase 1 of Dutch Point Colony redevelopment and revitalization project. Early in 2003 the City of Hartford was awarded a $20 million HOPE VI grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development which Congressman Larson strongly supported. The $20 million grant has paved the way for what is now over a $60 million project of local, state, federal and private funds. Early in 2005 the Dutch Point 186 unit, 1930’s barracks style housing project was razed to make way for the construction of this rental / home ownership development located between Coltsville and Adrian’s landing in Hartford.
Congressman Larson offered an amendment to the Manufacturing Technology Competitiveness Act on the floor of the House on September 21. The Larson amendment would have created an Undersecretary for Manufacturing and Technology to work with and advocate for the sagging manufacturing industry. The amendment was narrowly defeated by a vote of 210 - 213. Congressman Larson announced on September 19 a $193,724 grant for the East Granby volunteer fire department to update its equipment. Larson was joined by firefighters Ted Eisch, Troy Wolf, First Selectman David Kilbon, and Fire Chief Donald Zessin. On September 1, Congressman Larson held a press conference at Gerich Service Station in Manchester to announce his efforts to rein in rising fuel costs. Larson was joined by John Mitchell of Mitchell Fuel Co. in South Windsor, CT Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, and Gene Guilford of the Independent CT Petroleum Association. On September 1, Congressman Larson announced a $301,000 federal grant from the Department of Education to the Salvation Army in Hartford for a computer-based learning center to help struggling high school students. On August 31, Congressman Larson joined Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez and Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Steve Korta to unveil Hartford's new Circulator Bus. Congressman Larson held a town hall meeting at Manchester Community College on August 30 to discuss the challenge America faces in safeguarding weapons of mass destruction. On August 29, Congressman Larson attended the opening of the University of Hartford's new integrated engineering, science, and technology complex. Larson also announced a $1.03 million grant from the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology. On August 10, Congressman Larson joined Senator Lieberman, local officials, and district residents at West Hartford Town Hall to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Social Security. Larson met with three Social Security beneficiaries who spoke at the event: Catherine Adams-Besancon of Tariffville, Loretta Ricker of Middletown, and Bridgeport Councilman Ed Gomes. On July 7, Congressman Larson held a town hall forum in West Hartford to discuss the war in Iraq and the President's recent address to the nation. Congressman Larson spoke at the kick off for the Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Caucus on June 28. The caucus, co-founded by Larson, is dedicated to promoting hydrogen and fuel cells as an alternative to foreign petroleum. Congressman Larson visited UTC Power in South Windsor on May 31 to learn more about advancements in fuel-cell technology. Larson was recently awarded the 2005 Pathfinder Award from the U.S. Fuel Cell Council for his work in advancing fuel-cell technology. Congressman Larson visited Congregation Agudas Achim in West Hartford to discuss Social Security. On May 24, Congressman Larson spoke at the U.S. Fuel Cell Expo about fuel cells offering an end to our nation’s dependence on foreign energy sources while at the same time creating quality American jobs. Larson was recently awarded the 2005 Pathfinder Award from the U.S. Fuel Cell Council for his work in advancing fuel-cell technology. On March 28, Congressman Larson presented the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford with $100,000 from the US Department of Justice to fund local club after school programs. Larson was joined by Richard P. Brainerd, Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford chairman, Kenneth R. Darden, President & CEO, and Kordell Hinds, Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford 2005 Youth of the Year. During the President's Day district work period, Congressman Larson held several forums throughout the district to discuss the future of Social Security with his constituents. During March, Congressman Larson has met with a number of students who are visiting Washington with their high school. These schools include (from top to bottom): Berlin High School, Northwestern Regional High School, and Torrington High School. On January 5, Congressman Larson met with seniors at the Bloomfield Senior Center to discuss the new Medicare reform law. Larson talked about his concerns with many of its provisions and Judith Stein of the Center for Medicare Advocacy explained some of the practical aspects of the new law. Congressman Larson presented Judith Melchreit of Wethersfield with the 2004 Nancy Pilver Breast Cancer Heroine Award. The award, named after the late Nancy Pilver and the inaugural award recipient, is presented to a breast cancer survivor from the 1st Congressional District who is dedicated and determined to bringing the issue of breast cancer to the forefront.
