Congressman Larson asked President Clinton to come to Hartford as part of the President's “New Markets” tour, emphasizing ways that communities, business and government could come together to improve cities and towns that had not fully benefited from the nation's economic health. On August 28, 2000 Congressman Larson presented the military's Purple Heart award to Arden Passaro Sr. of East Hartford, for injuries Mr. Passaro sustained 57 years ago during the second World War. Here, Congressman Larson applauds Mr. Passaro and his wife, Mary Jane during the emotional ceremony held in the East Hartford Town Hall. Mr. Passaro was a member of the U.S. Army, 3rd Battalion, 111th Infantry and was serving on the island of Makin Atoll in the Pacific when a Japanese bomb blast permanently damaged his hearing on Dec. 23, 1943. He did not receive the award at the time because his records could not be found. After contacting the military and seeking help from Congressman Larson's Hartford office in May of 2000, his records were located in Connecticut and he was able to receive his award.

 


U.S. Congressman John B. Larson speaks on the floor of the House of Representatives about H.R. 1654, the reauthorization of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Congressman Larson spoke in favor of the legislation which contained funding for Ultra Efficient Engine Technology which is developed at Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, Connecticut. He said: "This program is focused on developing the next-generation of aerospace propulsion" and that the funding would have a positive impact on the U.S. commercial air fleet as well as the next generation of tactical military aircraft.

 

 


Janice M. Gruendel, Ph.D., Executive Director of Connecticut Voices for Children, testified before the House Science Committee on June 13 about a bill that includes proposals made by Congressman Larson to address the need for technology education. Larson's portion of the bill, which is Title II of The National Science Education Enhancement Act (H.R. 4272), was taken from a bill that he originally introduced known as the Alliance for Technologically Trained Teachers Act (H.R. 2933).

They were at the museum to announce legislation Larson has introduced that would preserve the route traveled by George Washington and French General Rochambeau before the decisive battle of the American Revolution at Yorktown. Part of the revolutionary route passes through Connecticut.

 


Congressman Larson is joined by officials from the White House, various federal agencies, Connecticut union and labor representatives,and local elected officials on June 26 in East Hartford at an announcement that a $7.2 million grant has been authorized from the U.S. Dept. of Labor for Connecticut-based UTC employees who are affected affected by UTC's restructuring to help them transition to new jobs.

Dr. James H. Billington, the Librarian of Congress, congratulates Congressman Larson for his support of the Library's Bicentennial Local Legacies Project. Larson and other Members of Congress honored Local Legacy participants on May 23 at the Library of Congress. Congressman Larson recently hosted a forum in West Hartford about proposed changes in the Medicare program in order to educate seniors.

October 3 at a Capitol Hill Press Conference

U.S. Congressman John B. Larson speaking on Tuesday,October 3 at a Capitol Hill Press Conference on the subject of closing the nation's "digital divide." Larson was joined by several of his House colleges, (left to right) Rep. Major Owens (D-NY), Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX), Rep. Juanita Millender-McDonald (D-CA), Rep. Edward Markey (D-MA), and Rep. Max Sandlin (D-TX). Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) and Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D-TX) were also in attendance. The House members held the press conference to announce that they have jointly drafted a legislative proposal aimed at closing the socioeconomic technology gap that exists in America. They also announced their intent to push for the Clinton Administration's education technology agenda as budget negotiations progress in this session of Congress.
