In light of the House's scheduled consideration of the next Shays-Meehan campaign finance regulation bill (H.R. 513) this week, the RSC released the following two documents:

  • This document highlights the major similarities and differences between citizens advocacy groups known as "527s" and those known as "501(c)4s."
  • This document highlights examples of well-funded entities that will continue to play large roles in campaign finance if 527s cease to function.

527's
Eight RSC Members, in light of mounting pressure to increase federal regulations on citizens groups known as "527s," sent this letter to House Leadership, stating that they will not vote for any legislation containing an increase in federal campaign finance regulations that does not also contain a simultaneous decrease in other campaign regulations.

Campaign Finance Reform Violations of Bush Principles

In March 2001, President Bush outlined six key principles that should be incorporated into any campaign finance reform bill that Congress passes. The Shays-Meehan bill would violate all six of the Bush principles.
