Myrick Votes To Build 700 Miles Of Fence On the Border

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Representative Sue Myrick (NC-9) voted for H.R. 6061, the Secure Fence Act.  This bill would authorize the construction of 700 miles of double-layered fence along the southwest border in areas where there are high levels of illegal alien crossings.

“Several weeks ago my Congressional office was overflowing with people who came to a congressional hearing on illegal immigration.  The overwhelming majority of those people, and the people across the US, want our borders secure.  We have heard their voices loud and clear, and this bill will continue our push to secure our border,” said Rep. Myrick.

This bill also mandates that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) work to build a “virtual fence” that deploys cameras, ground sensors, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and integrated surveillance technology to help secure the border.  In addition, it requires DHS to provide all necessary authority to border personnel to disable fleeing vehicles, similar to the authority held by the United States Coast Guard for maritime vessels, and requires DHS to assess vulnerabilities on the northern border.
