Congressman Jim Kolbe
8TH DISTRICT ARIZONA
PRESS RELEASE

August 28, 2006

KOLBE CALLS ON PRESIDENT FOR

EMERGENCY FUNDING FOR FLOOD CLEANUP

(Washington, DC)  -- Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-AZ) has called on President Bush to use emergency federal funding to assist with cleanup efforts in Pima and Pinal Counties following the monsoon flooding in July and August.

“This summer’s floods were as bad as any I’ve seen in my years in Congress,” said Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-AZ). “It is vital that we work quickly to restore the roads, bridges and other damaged infrastructure.  Federal disaster relief could do a great deal to help.”

Under the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act, the President may declare an emergency or a major disaster, which opens the way for a wide range of federal resources to be made available to assist with cleanup and recovery efforts.  Congressman Kolbe, along with Governor Napolitano, has requested that the President exercise his authority under this Act to make funding available in the form of Public Assistance (public infrastructure damage) and Hazard Mitigation Programs.  Governor Napolitano declared a state of emergency for those two counties on August 8, 2006.
