– In a joint press conference today, the Detroit Zoological
Society and Congressman Joe Knollenberg (R-MI/09) announced
that the Detroit Zoo will receive a $100,000 grant from the
Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
The
grant is slated to be used for the
Ford
Education
Center
at the Zoo. The funding will assist in the completion of a
new, 240 seat theater which will host concerts and theatrical
performances.
“The
Ford
Education
Center
is a great facility and will give students of all ages a
unique and far-reaching learning experience. We know that kids
learn in many different ways, and the Center provides
opportunities for all,”
Congressman Knollenberg said.
“The
Detroit
Zoological Society and our community have worked together to
make the Zoo a memorable, fun, and educational place for all
to visit. Through the hard work and diligence of the society,
the Zoo is better than ever and will continue to be a
wonderful resource for our community for years to come,”
he continued.
The
funding for the Detroit Zoo was including in the 2006
Transportation/Treasury Appropriations Act which passed
Congress last year. The grant is part of HUD’s Economic
Development Initiative program and recently received final
agency approval.
