Private Property Bill Passes House

I am pleased to inform you that on November 3, 2005, the House passed H.R. 4128, the Private Property Rights Protection Act. I cast my vote in strong support of this legislation. This legislation prohibits state and local governments from using Federal dollars for projects that use economic development as a rationale for eminent domain. I believe that if the Federal government is providing funding for such projects it should retain oversight and discretion into how these funds are spent, especially in light of the highly erroneous decision by the United States Supreme Court in Kelo v. New London. Throughout my time in Congress, I have been an ardent supporter of private property rights and it is my hope that this legislation will be passed in the Senate in the near future.
