Thomas: Congress needs to address energy legislation

November 4th, 2004 - WASHINGTON – With the re-election of President Bush and a decisive win for republicans in the Senate, Sen. Craig Thomas sees a great opportunity to address our nation’s much-needed energy legislation.
“A greater majority of republicans in Congress will be helpful as I work toward a balanced energy policy to benefit our state and the nation,” Thomas said. The senator is a senior member of the Energy Committee and has positioned himself on committees which give him oversight of issues that significantly affect Wyoming.
Thomas, R-Wyo., was able to pass several tax provisions of the comprehensive energy policy in 2004, while also bringing many helpful initiatives to the people of Wyoming. However, election year politics stymied the bulk of the energy legislation.
“If ever there was a time to pass energy policy, now is the time,” Thomas said. “There is a need to pursue the research and technology that uses coal to produce hydrogen and diesel fuel. Wyoming needs to generate and transmit electricity. We can make that happen through the use of clean-burning power plants.” The Administration has been proposing a balanced energy policy all along, Thomas explained.
The republican majority in the Senate increased by four seats to 55. The House gained several republican seats, with current totals of 231 republicans, 200 democrats, and one independent, while three races were waiting to be called.
