WYSTAR receives $1.1 million through Thomas request
|
|
November 23rd, 2004 - WASHINGTON – Sen. Craig Thomas (R-Wyo.) locked in funding for important health care initiatives which will provide both educational tools and expanded services in Wyoming as part of the Omnibus Appropriations Act.
As part of that focus, Wyoming Substance Abuse Treatment and Recovery Center (WYSTAR) received $1.1 million with the passage of the omnibus package.
“This program satisfies a critical need both in Sheridan and for the folks in the region. Substance abuse programs fit into my broader plan to improve our health care and quality of life in Wyoming,” Thomas said. “WYSTAR provides an essential service, especially for mothers who wouldn’t otherwise be able to get treatment,” Thomas said.
WYSTAR is a non-profit center offering regional gender-specific substance abuse treatment services to women and women with children.
“Senator Thomas has really delivered for Sheridan,” said BJ Kristiansen, Board President of WYSTAR. “These funds will help combat the methamphetamine problem that we're facing and will improve the lives of hundreds of families in Sheridan County,” he said.
“This appropriation is part of a large expansion that WYSTAR is planning,” said Kristiansen. “While we still have substantial funds to raise, this federal assistance is an excellent cornerstone for this campaign,” he said.
Over the past few years, WYSTAR has seen its residential treatment programs pushed to the limit. The program has more than 275 clients per year including referrals from state programs, insurance companies, and private businesses. WYSTAR is seeking to expand intervention and treatment services to an estimated 720 women and women with children annually. An on-campus therapeutic Child Care Center will serve each client’s children's needs, from birth to pre-school age. “The Gathering Place” programs will incorporate a first-of-its-kind research technique to help states gather real-time data on treatment and recovery techniques for at-risk rural populations.
