Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick Announces
“An Artistic Discovery” Contest Winners

Detroit, MI — Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick (13th District, Michigan) is pleased to announce the winners of “An Artistic Discovery.”

“The young people in Southeastern Michigan are extremely talented and creative. This annual contest is a wonderful opportunity to recognize and nurture their artistic abilities,” said Congresswoman Kilpatrick. “This year’s submissions were outstanding. All of the students are winners and should be proud of their accomplishment.”

First place went to James French of Wyandotte’s Roosevelt High School, whose artwork will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol. Second place went to Amanda Prescott, also from Roosevelt High School. Her artwork will be displayed in Congresswoman Kilpatrick’s downriver office in Wyandotte. Evette Brooks of Detroit’s Kettering High School won third place. Her artwork will be displayed in the Detroit district office.

Seven students received honorable mentions: Marsha Baldridge and Evette Brooks of Kettering High School; Yolanda Calderon and Keshia Summer of Chadsey High School; Ashley Davidson and Chantel Soucie of Roosevelt High School; and Andrea Woods of Denby High School.

All 10 students received Congressional certificates of recognition from Congresswoman Kilpatrick. They also received Y-Arts Scholarships from the Boll Family YMCA in downtown Detroit.

This is the tenth year Congresswoman Kilpatrick has offered “An Artistic Discovery.” Now in its 25th year, the annual, nationwide Congressional art competition provides participating Members of Congress with an opportunity to acknowledge the creative talents of their high school constituents. Since this competition was created in 1982, hundreds of thousands of high school students have participated at the local level.

First place winners in each Congressional District competition will have their winning entries displayed as part of the national exhibition in the Cannon Tunnel at the U.S. Capitol. They are also eligible to compete for a scholarship from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia and will be invited to Washington, D.C. for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, June 28.
