Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick Secures $750,000 for Wyandotte’s Wind Energy Project
Appropriator Helps City Obtain Funding for Second Consecutive Year

Detroit, MI — Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick secured $750,000 for the Wyandotte Green Windpower on Brownfields Project, an innovative initiative through which renewable wind energy turbines will be installed on an urban brownfield site. The first of its kind in the nation, the project will serve as a model for renewable energy production.

This is the second appropriation Congresswoman Kilpatrick has secured for Wyandotte’s wind energy project. Kilpatrick, the only Michigan Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, helped the city obtain $1 million for the initiative during the 2006 funding cycle.

“America’s families deserve safe, reliable, and affordable energy. We must explore solar and wind energy initiatives to enhance efficiency and conservation,” said Congresswoman Kilpatrick. “The City of Wyandotte’s wind energy project will play a significant role in supplying the local community’s energy needs, addressing environmental concerns, and creating jobs in the region. I applaud city leaders and the organizations supporting this effort. Their vision and commitment will help position our region as a leader in the exploration and development of alternative energy sources.”

The Green Windpower on Brownfields Project is being funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy under H.R. 5427, the Energy and Water Appropriations Act for the fiscal year 2007. The measure passed the House on Wednesday.

“It has been extremely beneficial for the City of Wyandotte to have Congresswoman Kilpatrick on our side. Her support makes these types of energy efficiency initiatives affordable for the City, and we appreciate her efforts to help us secure funding,” said Melanie McCoy, general manager of Wyandotte Municipal Services. “This project has generated excitement and interest in our community because it will create jobs, provide renewable energy, and improve the environment.”
