Lawmakers Team Up to Honor African American Basketball
Pioneers: Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick (D-MI) and
Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) celebrate the recent signing of a bill
honoring the lives and legacy of African American basketball pioneers.
The bill, introduced by Congresswoman Kilpatrick, also recognizes the
impact these players had on the game of basketball and American life.

On a cold snowy day in December, the 100 year old historic building that sits at 333 Mt. Elliot and Jefferson in Detroit, Michigan, was dedicated as the Rosa Parks Federal Building. Ms. Parks was arrested on December 1, 1955 and fifty years later, on December 1, 2005, her life and dream still live on.

Congresswoman Kilpatrick is joined by Congressman Conyers, Mayor of Detroit Kwame Kilpatrick, Homeland Security officers and the Parks family as they cut the ribbon to the new Rosa Parks Federal Building.

“Today is the first day of the rest of our lives, what’s going to be your Rosa Moment, and what will you do to honor her sacrifices?” said Congresswoman Kilpatrick.

Congresswoman Kilpatrick welcomes Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Jeffery St. John home from his tour in Iraq. In June of 2004, Staff Sgt. St. John suffered a severe injury in his upper abdomen by a mortar blast in Mosul, Iraq.
