Rep. Taylor Announces Funds for New Equipment for Laurel Fire Department

Washington, May 16 -  Western North Carolina Representative Charles Taylor announced today that funding has been approved to assist Laurel Fire Department with the purchase of a new fire truck. USDA Rural Development has approved a low-interest loan of $16,430.00 and a grant of $20,070.00 for the project. The funds will be used to purchase a new 2006 fire truck that will be completely outfitted with equipment from an existing 1981 model rescue truck. Being over 25 years old, the older truck needs a new engine and extensive body work, therefore making it not feasible for repair. The new vehicle will allow the fire department to improve their response time and possibly their insurance rating. An improvement in the insurance rating would mean an insurance premium reduction for each of the 1647 residents in the fire district.

“I am pleased that I was able to assist Laurel Fire Department in securing these funds,” said Rep. Taylor. “Our emergency and rescue workers do a wonderful job in Western North Carolina. Departments in rural counties such as Madison are particularly pressed for funds because of the small tax base. These funds will help to improve fire and rescue service for hundreds of families.”
